With The United Nations Climate Change Conference, (COP21 or CMP11) being held in Paris, this year from November 30 to December 11, 2015 and the Chinese economy floundering, I felt, as a father of two young children, that I have a moral, ethical and professional obligation to think about intergenerational environmental equity and the world we will leave to our children.
I am a huge believer in the Native American Proverb that states: ‘We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors; we borrow it from our children.’
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has near universal membership with 196 Parties. It was also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol which was ratified by 192 of its members. The ultimate objective of this treaty was to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous human interference with the world’s climate systems.
China is currently having massive economic AND environmental issues as it struggles to ‘re-balance’ its economy. Beijing’s air quality is getting worse every year. (In fact, the air in Beijing is so polluted that breathing it does as much damage to the lungs as smoking 40 cigarettes a day, according to a new study by U.S.-based non-profit group called Berkeley Earth.) The primary sources of pollutants includes exhaust emission from Beijing’s more than five million motor vehicles, coal burning power stations and dust storms caused by a number of factors. The Chinese are currently the undisputed leaders in causative factors relating to ‘man-made’ climate change as they are the world’s heaviest users of dirty fossil fuels. In fact, a network of sensors across China indicated that more than 80 percent of Chinese people are regularly exposed to pollution that far exceeds levels deemed safe by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
While in the USA, a recent study from Nature Geoscience, indicated progress in slashing unhealthy ozone in the western United States, however this progress has been largely undone by pollution wafting across the Pacific from China, according to their study. Willem Verstraeten of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute recently stated, “In a manner of speaking, China is exporting its air pollution to the West Coast of America,” It seems Scientists have long suspected this might explain why ozone levels along the US west coast remained constant despite a significant local reduction in ozone-forming chemicals.
However, if Australia continues its ‘business as usual model’ under Tony Abbott and his Coalition Parties stewardship, the world’s plans to tackle global warming will fail. Importantly, Australia has a larger share of the seaborne coal market than Saudi Arabia has of the world oil market! The Abbott Government is still planning to sell even more coal to world markets over the next 10 years. This means any deal reached at the Paris climate talks in December will be undone by the planned thermal coal expansion projects in Australia and a handful of other countries. However, it’s not China that is the biggest polluter on the planet on a per capita basis; it’s Australia with its plans to double its current coal exports.
I am appalled that Political leaders, particularly in the US and Australia, are not confronting climate change but rather “sticking their collective heads in the sand” and pretending it isn’t happening. Instead we also need to be taking massive action in the USA and Australia by rebalancing our economies – but action that doesn’t throw the economy and jobs out the window at the same time.
Many of the leading Republican presidential candidates in the US are openly sceptical of climate science and play down the risks of climate change. And, in Australia, Tony Abbott and much of his Government, are firm climate change deniers – I urge every person who reads this post do one of the following:
- Call for your government to negotiate a global moratorium on new coal mines.
- URGE your Federal, State and Local governments to stop supporting companies or industries that have big fossil fuel interests and use higher levels of Renewable Energy and
- Cut your own carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants by switching to Renewable Energy sources such as wind, solar and green energy.
It is also worth noting that climate change is causing Global Disruption on a scale never experienced before. The economies and businesses that will prosper are those that are the ‘greenest’ and the most energy-efficient. E.g. Tesla, SolarCity, Uber, etc.
Importantly, we have a chance to make history at #COP21.
Demand a strong climate agreement.

Finally, think about researchers at the University of California, Davis, who projected that the drought would cost the California economy some $2.7 billion this year. Much of that pain is being felt in the state’s huge farming industry, which has been forced to idle a half-million acres and has seen valuable crops like almond trees and grape vines die. Then there’s the irreversible damage to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef caused by the coal industry shipping and climate change. The biennial State of the Climate report, released recently by the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO, found sea-surface temperatures in the Australian region had risen 0.9 degrees since 1900. Temperatures last year were 0.5 degrees above the 1961-90 average. Ocean acidity had risen about 26 per cent since 1750, the report said.
In this era of the acceleration of everything, and you know I am passionate about ‘disruption’ too. But, I truly believe – Fossil fuel ostriches, like many Republicans (US) and Tony Abbott (Liberals/Nationals Coalition in Australia)
What the sceptics and climate change deniers don’t seem to understand is, when disruption happens, it happens with breathe-taking speed – usually between 2 -10 years.
Disruption is ahead, nothing is surer. Please take massive action TODAY.
