ELEVATOR PITCH SECRETS: HOW TO GRAB INVESTORS’​ ATTENTION IN 60 SECONDS

As an entrepreneur with three decades of experience in both Silicon Valley and Madison Avenue, I have seen first-hand the incredible impact that technology and innovation have on the world. And it’s no secret that the most successful CEO’s and corporations are putting their money into the latest and greatest technologies, including the metaverse, blockchain, crypto, web3, AR/VR, smart contracts, ai and NFTs. These cutting-edge technologies are shaping the future and offering limitless possibilities for growth and success.

Today we are in an era of limitless possibilities, where dreams can be brought to life with a simple pitch. The power of words, the power of ideas, has never been more important, and that is why crafting a killer “Elevator Pitch” is essential for any entrepreneur, inventor or visionary looking to bring their idea to life.

As I last wrote about this topic in April 2016 with an article entitled “Need to craft a killer Elevator Speech today?” URL: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/need-craft-killer-elevator-speech-today-geoff-de-weaver/ I thought it was time, I update and share more of my experience gained over decades with working with VC’s, Family Trusts, UHNWIs, CEOs globally. And, I still believe, VC’s will not penalize you for having audacious global goals and visions!

Yes, I think Elon Musk said it best when he stated:

“The key to a successful elevator pitch is having a clear message and being able to articulate it effectively.” – Elon Musk, Tesla, and SpaceX CEO

I stand before you, a pioneer of the digital age, with a wealth of experience and lessons learned over three decades in the tech industry, working with brands like: E*Trade, EA.com, IMG, TiVo, P&G, Air France, IBM, Acer Computers, Shutterfly.com, VISA, Microsoft, Weight Watchers, Nestle, Unilever, Ferrari and more. I have seen the power of a well-crafted pitch, the power of a simple and concise message, and the limitless potential it can unlock.

And that is why I am here today, to share with you my hard-won insights and to help you craft a killer Elevator Pitch that will convince VC’s, UHNWIs, CEOs, high net worth investors and Angels to listen, to invest and to bring your vision to life.

The Elevator Pitch is an art form, a way to communicate your ideas in a short, succinct, and compelling way, and today I will share with you the essential rules and laws that will help you craft the perfect pitch.

“Making Your Dreams a Reality: The Power of Words and Ideas”

The first rule of crafting a killer Elevator Pitch is to keep it short, under 30 seconds if possible. In today’s world, where our attention spans are shorter than ever, it is essential that you can communicate your idea in a quick and effective way.

The Twitter Pitch is a great example of this, where you are limited to 140 characters to express your idea. If you can’t write down your business idea on the back of a business card or in a Tweet, then you don’t truly understand it, and you won’t be able to convince others to understand it either.

The second rule is to keep it simple, using the KISS principle. Your pitch should be easy to understand, and you should never confuse the listener. The most innovative and complex ideas should be broken down into simple and easy-to-understand statements. This is critical to your success.

Let me ‘dive a little deeper’ by when I say the KISS principle. By that I mean: The KISS principle stands for “Keep It Simple, Stupid.”

It is a design principle that emphasizes the importance of simplicity and clarity in communication, design, and overall approach to problem-solving. The KISS principle suggests that the most effective solutions are often the simplest and easiest to understand.

In the context of an elevator pitch, the KISS principle means that you should aim to keep your pitch simple and straightforward, avoiding complicated jargon or technical details that might distract from your message. By focusing on the key elements of your pitch and eliminating any extraneous information, you can make a lasting impression on potential investors and inspire them to believe in the limitless potential of your idea.

The goal of an elevator pitch is to be concise and impactful, leaving a lasting impression on the listener. The KISS principle helps to ensure that your pitch is easy to understand and that it effectively communicates the key value proposition of your product or idea. By keeping your pitch simple and straightforward, you can help to create an experience for the listener that is memorable and inspires them to act.

The third rule is to be bold and authentic. Your pitch should reflect your passion and your vision for your business. It should inspire and excite, and it should show the limitless potential of your idea.

And finally, the fourth rule is to have a call to action. Your pitch should end with a clear and concise request, asking the listener to act, whether it be to invest, to partner or to help bring your vision to life.

Crafting a killer Elevator Pitch is not just about impressing VC’s, Angels, UHNWIs, Family Trusts and Investors, it is about inspiring them to believe in your vision, to support you, and to join you in making your dream a reality.

As a globally experienced entrepreneur and business leader, I have had the privilege of perfecting my elevator pitch over the last 30 years in some of the most competitive and dynamic business environments in the world, including New York City, San Francisco, Sydney and Singapore. Over this time, I have honed my skills and developed a formula for crafting an impactful pitch that has helped me secure billions of dollars in funding for my clients and my own projects.

Here is an example of how I might even use an Elevator Pitch to a VC if we were to share an elevator ride up a few floors in a business meeting in Tampa or New York City for another example for you to ‘model’:

“Geoff De Weaver is a visionary entrepreneur and digital/web1 pioneer, known for his expertise in the fields of technology, marketing, real estate, and innovation. With over 30 years of experience driving business growth worldwide, he helps companies navigate the ever-evolving landscape of modern commerce, including web3, metaverse, and smart contracts. As a “special bonus” for reading this article today, I am going to provide you how I like to write my Elevator Pitches. AND I am going to use three entrepreneur’s and their incredible companies to demonstrate how important you must treat your Elevator Pitch in 2023.

MY EXAMPLES OF ELEVATOR PITCHES FOR TESLA, VIRGIN AND AMAZON AND, FOR ELON MUSK, RICHARD BRANSON, AND JEFF BEZOS:

  • Elevator Pitch for Tesla: Tesla is a company that is revolutionizing the transportation industry with its electric vehicles and energy solutions. With a focus on sustainability and innovation, Tesla is leading the charge towards a more sustainable future and making a positive impact on the world.
  • Elevator Pitch for Virgin: Virgin is a company that’s all about making a difference and challenging the status quo. With a diverse portfolio of businesses and a commitment to innovation, Virgin is constantly pushing the limits and creating new opportunities for growth and success.
  • Elevator Pitch for Amazon: Amazon is a company that’s changing the way the world shops and does business. With a focus on convenience, innovation, and customer satisfaction, Amazon is leading the e-commerce revolution and creating limitless opportunities for growth and impact.
  • Elevator Pitch for Elon Musk: Elon Musk is a visionary entrepreneur who is changing the world. With a passion for innovation and a drive to make a positive impact, Elon is constantly pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and creating new solutions for some of the world’s biggest challenges.
  • Elevator Pitch for Richard Branson: Richard Branson is a business magnate and adventurer who is constantly pushing the limits and making a difference. With a diverse portfolio of businesses and a commitment to innovation, Richard is always seeking out new opportunities to make a positive impact on the world.
  • Elevator Pitch for Jeff Bezos: Jeff Bezos is a visionary entrepreneur and the founder of Amazon. With a focus on innovation, customer satisfaction, and long-term thinking, Jeff has revolutionized the way the world shops and created limitless opportunities for growth and impact.

The key to a successful elevator pitch is to be simple, impactful, and to demonstrate passion and a huge idea. In my experience, the best pitches are those that are concise, memorable, and leave a lasting impression on the listener. They should be able to convey the unique value proposition of your product or idea and explain how it solves a particular problem in a way that is both compelling and easy to understand.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when crafting an elevator pitch is to focus on the problem your product or idea solves.

This is often the most challenging part of the pitch, as it requires a deep understanding of your market and your target audience. However, if you can clearly articulate the problem your product or idea solves and how it creates value, you will be well on your way to securing the funding you need to bring your vision to life.

To make a lasting impact, your pitch should be able to tell a story and create an emotional connection with the listener. This means that you need to be able to convey the passion and excitement you have for your product or idea in a way that is contagious. You should be able to inspire the listener to believe in the limitless potential of your vision and to see the potential for growth and success.
