In 2004, as CEO of Jackgreen (Jackgreen) (Australia’s first green energy retailer), the market still largely viewed electricity as a “low-interest, low-involvement” category, with traditional players like EnergyAustralia™, Integral Energy, TXU, AGL, Origin Energy, and Citipower dominating the scene. While they focused on power, reliability, and regionality, Jackgreen saw a future that was not just bright, but green.

Our mission wasn’t just about selling electricity; it was about building a movement to inspire environmental change and consumer responsibility. Our bold, three-pillar strategy—Green Power, Community Support, and Pricing Policy—set the stage for a groundbreaking shift, introducing a new paradigm of environmental responsibility within the energy sector.

We partnered with Millward Brown (now Kantar), a global leader in market research, to explore the full emotional and social dimensions of energy consumption. This exhaustive study gave us the insights to transform not only our product offering but the very way consumers thought about energy.

The milestones speak for themselves: securing a New South Wales Retail License in March 2002, becoming a National Electricity Market Code Participant in January 2004, joining the Electricity & Water Ombudsman NSW (EWON) scheme in June 2005, and listing on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) under the ticker symbol JGL.

The investment from Babcock & Brown (Babcock & Brown), a global investment firm, validated our pioneering work and further established Jackgreen as a leader in green energy.

The work we did at Jackgreen set the stage for my next venture with Think Energy, where I continued to push boundaries by creating innovative products and highly targeted marketing strategies. This journey, alongside my experience in Web1, Web2, Web3, and global real estate, gave me the insights and foresight to continue pioneering across multiple industries.

I’ve always been an advocate not only for clean energy but also for clean water and protecting our beaches. In fact, my commitment to environmental sustainability began early in my career when I was a young marketing and advertising executive at MOJO Advertising in Sydney, Australia. (Honored as the International Advertising Agency of the Year in 1988 by Advertising Age, a leading U.S. industry publication.)

After graduating from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, I was the lead on one of the main harborside beaches in Sydney, Australia on the first-ever Clean Up Australia Day held on January 21, 1990. This event, spearheaded by Ian Kiernan, inspired me deeply. The Clean Up Australia Day initiative, which began as Clean Up Sydney Harbor in 1989, saw over 40,000 volunteers gather to help clean the harbor.

Ian Kiernan AO (1940–2018) was a prominent Australian environmentalist, yachtsman, and the founder of Clean Up Australia. While he was the driving force behind the legendary, visionary organisation. His daughter, Pip Kiernan,currently serves as the Chair of Clean Up Australia, continuing his legacy.

With the catchy jingle “Yucky Yucky Yucky Poo” written by Alan “Mo” Morris and Allan “Jo” Johnston (the co -founders of the iconic Australian advertising agency Mojo, the event gained momentum and turned into Australia’s largest community-based environmental event, with over 35 million hours dedicated to improving our environment and removing more than 365,000 Ute loads of garbage. This was about much more than just a day of cleaning—it was about inspiring a movement to protect our environment and create a cleaner, greener future.

The mission of Clean Up Australia is to inspire and mobilize communities to improve and conserve our environment, eliminate litter, and end waste. I have always been proud to have played a part in this movement, even from its earliest stages, and it continues to drive my passion for environmental advocacy today.

During my time at MOJO Advertising, I had the privilege of working on some of Australia’s most iconic campaigns. These included “Put another Shrimp on the Barbie” for the Australian Tourism Commission, “C’mon Aussie, C’mon” to promote World Series Cricket for the Nine Network, “I Still Call Australia Home” for Qantas, and “I Got It Made” for Subway in Australia and New Zealand. MOJO, co-founded by Alan “Mo” Morris and Allan “Jo” Johnston, was honored as the International Advertising Agency of the Year in 1988 by Advertising Age, a leading U.S. industry publication.

This recognition marked the pinnacle of the agency’s worldwide influence during the 1980s, solidifying its place as a force to be reckoned with. The agency’s irreverent, jingle-driven advertising style, and its campaigns like “C’mon Aussie, C’mon” and “Put another shrimp on the barbie”, played a key role in shaping Australia’s national identity.

As a young Account Director at MOJO, affectionately dubbed “De Westpac” by the creative all-stars behind the Westpac Banking Account, I earned my nickname as the “yank” in a team that dominated both Australia and the global scene. We celebrated every victory—big or small—by singing “Happy Birthday,” a tradition that fueled our relentless drive and kept us focused on one thing: winning.

In 1988, MOJO merged with Monaghan Dayman Adams to form MojoMDA, expanding its global presence with offices in London, New York, San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Singapore. These experiences in San Francisco, the epicenter of tech innovation, alongside the agency’s continued success, were fundamental in shaping my career, drive, and passion for being limitless.
