As many of you my recall, LinkedIn used to show everyone their total reach membership to their 3rd Connection Level. (Not just 1st & 2nd connections like today). Access to your 3rd connection level data points disappeared shortly before Microsoft acquired them.
BUT, if you are still interested in understanding your business impact on LinkedIn today – I’ll share with you a ‘must have’ bulletproof ‘Growth Hack’ to help you plan and arrange your domination in the B2B and social selling space. This simple and very easy to implement is known as a ‘Boolean String’.
So, what is a Boolean String?
A Boolean String is a type of search which allows users to combine keywords with operators (or modifiers) such as AND, NOT and OR to further produce more relevant results. For example, a Boolean search could be “Ad Agency” AND “New York”. This would limit the search results to only those documents containing those two keywords.
A Boolean search string is basically a mathematical formula that generates a specific list that meets a defined criteria.
TIP 1: USE YOUR BOOLEAN STRING AND APPLY PARETO’S PRINCIPLE!
In other words, by developing a highly targeted search strings you can pinpoint your exact buyers, influencers, and stakeholders on LinkedIn and start conversation with right people. And, as we all know as good marketers, you can follow Pareto’s Principle, i.e. your Top 20% of buyers will contribute up to 80% of your success! These means, you might use the Pareto Principle to target customers in the following ways:
- 20% of workers contribute 80% or results: So, focus on rewarding those employees! or
- 20% of customers contribute 80% of revenue: So focus on satisfying those customers.
The Pareto Principle (also known as the 80/20 rule, and is the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity.) This simply means that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Pareto developed both concepts in the context of the distribution of income and wealth among the population.
BOTTOMLINE – ALWAYS FISH WHERE THE FISH ARE!
TIP 2: SEARCH PROFILES ON LINKEDIN:

Importantly, if you want to increase your influence, build business relationships that matter, and importantly know everything about everybody – you need to start using LinkedIn and fully grasp the power of social selling and Boolean String!

IMPROVE YOUR SOCIAL SELLING EFFORTS ON LINKEDIN BY GETTING MORE TARGETED & FOCUSED
There’s so much you can do with Boolean search strings. They will enable you to go from good to great at building powerful search strings but remember it requires practice, focus, clarity and tons of trial and error.
But remember, you can go beyond just searching for key roles or titles and improve your outreach by thinking outside of the box by targeting commonly used phrases or intent-signals, i.e. hiring, seeking, startup, VC, building, “in stealth mode”, etc. If you want to improve your social selling efforts, start by improving your lead list.
